Outboard starters make an easy crank and start big motors. It uses a battery to energize the Bendix and engage the starter ring. While mid-sized and smaller outboard motors have to pull rope and electric outboard starters, larger ones only have electric outboard starts. The electricity to ignite these outboard starters is usually provided by a separate specialized battery. Some outboard motor models also function as electrical generators, charging the battery while the motor is running. The starter motor rotates the engine over as power is provided until it starts. When the starter motor turns on, the brushes and wiring within becoming activated and take on the characteristics of an alternator or generator, sending current back to the batteries that are charging it. In addition, an onboard regulator turns on and off the charging element within the starter to avoid overcharging the boat's battery.
