Gimbal bearings are specialized ball bearings/races. One of its primary maritime applications is in boat engine drive shafts, where it maintains alignment utilizing gimbal technology.
Gimbal bearings connect an offshore drilling rig's riser system to the vessel. It safeguards the equipment from excessive loads and damage. The gimbal bearings employ several elastomeric pads in a circular array to sustain the weight of the drilling riser while supporting vessel and riser oscillations. The intense loads and environmental conditions that these pads are subjected to in-service can cause significant elastomer degradation and bond separation, reducing pad life.
