A ball bearing is a particular rolling element that aids motion by performing three primary tasks: carrying weights, lowering friction, and positioning moving machine elements. Ball bearings employ balls to divide two "races," or bearing rings that lessen surface contact and friction between moving planes. The ball bearing is the least expensive compared to other bearing types, generally due to the cheap cost of manufacturing the bearing's balls.
Due to the smaller contact area between the balls and races compared to other rolling-element bearings, ball bearings typically have a lower load capacity for their size. They will, however, put up with some discord between the inner and outer races. A ball bearing's essential functions are to support radial and axial loads and lessen rotational friction.
