Bushings can reduce friction between two moving surfaces. If the shaft of your boat can move inside the strut, the bushings are old or broken, and you should replace them. Vibration from a boat with damaged strut bushings might cause further problems, such as a damaged shaft, V-drive, or gearbox seals. A bushing is a mechanical device that decreases friction between rotating shafts and stationary support components. This bushing supports the rotating shaft on the hardened shaft journal using soft metal or plastic and an oil layer. Plain bearings are seen in machinery with a rotating or sliding shaft component. Some shaft journals are relatively soft metal to protect them.
