Crankshaft seals direct oil back into the oil pan or sump to maintain the proper oil level and stop leaks into the ground. There are two crank seals on your engine; one is behind the crankshaft harmonic balancer in the front, and the other is behind the flywheel in the back.
Your engine's crank seal is a crucial component. Typically, rubber and metal make it. Its function is to seal the crankshaft's end. The crank seal prevents dirt and other debris from entering while keeping oil in.
