The rate at which a pulse is sent into the water by any solid object that tries to pass through between the transducer and the ocean floor is measured by depth sounders. The receiving device will then convert this data into a variety of outputs, including basic depth measurements or three-dimensional images, depending on the sophistication of the technology used.
