How important is the distributor cap? The distributor cap holds the contacts between the inner rotor and the spark plug wires in place and protects the distributor's internal components. The voltage from the ignition coils is passed through the distributor caps and rotors to the engine's cylinders, which ignites the fuel-air combination inside and powers the engine. The coil is directly connected to the rotor that spins inside the distributor cap.
How to check your distributor cap? Start the engine with the hatch up at night, in a very dark spot with as little background light as possible, and look for lightning. If you're worried, spray the cap and wires with water from an old Windex bottle and keep an eye out for lightning.
