All marine engines feature exhaust mixing elbows where extra cooling water is injected and combined with exhaust gases leaving the engine's exhaust manifold, cooling the exhaust and also reducing noise levels. The hot acidic gases and salt mixture will seek out any potential weaknesses in the components, but this also generates a very hostile corrosive environment, especially in seawater. Additionally, these elbows frequently develop carbon and salt buildup over time. As these deposits accumulate, they may obstruct the engine's exhaust flow and progressively choke it, making the motor run poorly.
