FREEZE PLUG (PK OF 8) - 18-5961-9 in the engine pop out to alleviate pressure on the engine block if the coolant in the engine freezes. It is a simple approach to keep coolant from leaking out of the vessel. On water-cooled internal combustion engines, it is used to fill sand casting core holes.
It works by plugging a hole in the engine block that leads to the coolant channel. It has a base piece with a diameter that is smaller than the hole's nominal diameter, allowing the plug to be hand-fitted into the coolant hole at an intermediate non-sealing position.
