Description

A boat propeller's installation requires a forward thrust washer because it prevents the propeller from moving forward under thrust while transmitting thrust to the shaft and shielding the gear housing and its seal from coming into touch with the revolving propeller.

The matched taper on the prop shaft and the washer is an efficient solution to prevent a thrust washer from going too far forward. When the soft inner prop hub fails to do so under challenging high-torque circumstances, the thrust washer also aids in keeping the propeller centered on the shaft. They stop motion along the shaft and support axial loads or side-to-side motion. The thrust washer offers a surface for supporting a bearing.
