Gas-charged lift supports are energy storage devices that generate power by compressing gas within a cylinder. The energy is stored when the door is closed. When the door is wide open, energy is released to raise a hatch, hood, liftgate, or trunk, keeping them safely open. Gas-charged lift supports are frequently mistaken for shock absorbers or struts, which absorb energy to regulate motion. Lift supports generally contain a gas charge of 1,500 psi and are not compressible by hand. All gas-charged lift supports degrade over time by design. They are usually out of sight until they stop working correctly. The most typical reasons for failure include natural permeability loss of gas pressure.
