Gas-charged lift supports are energy storage devices that generate energy by compressing gas inside a cylinder. When the door is closed, the energy is stored; however, when the doors are opened, the power is released to raise a hatch, hood, liftgate, or trunk, keeping them safely open. Gas-charged lift supports are frequently mistaken for shock absorbers or struts, which absorb energy to control motion.
