Energy is in gas-charged lift supports, which produce power by compressing gas inside a cylinder. When the door is closed, the bounce is stored. Energy is released when the door is fully open to raising the hood, liftgate, or trunk, keeping them securely open. Shock absorbers or struts are frequently confused with gas-charged lift supports, which absorb energy to control motion. Lift supports typically have a 1,500 psi gas charge inside of them and cannot be compressed manually. By design, all gas-charged lift supports deteriorate with time. Most of the time, they are invisible until they start to malfunction. The natural permeability loss of gas pressure is one of the most frequent causes of failure.
