The exhaust cover gasket prevents motor oil from seeping out of the joint by sealing the valve cover/cam cover to the top of the engine cylinder head. While sealed in engine oil, the exhaust cover gasket withstands the strains of the two surfaces expanding, contracting, warping, and rubbing.
