In an internal combustion engine, a head gasket is a seal that exists between the engine block and the cylinder head. It keeps the engine cool and prevents fuel and oil from escaping. The compression of a cylinder is reduced when a failing head gasket enables compressed air/fuel to escape. This decrease in pressure causes the engine to run rough and significantly reduces engine output. The head gasket's role is to keep coolant from entering the combustion chamber through these channels.
