Description

The device that pumps fuel into the cylinders of a diesel engine is known as an injection pump. Historically, the injection pump was powered indirectly from the crankshaft via gears, chains, or a toothed belt (often the timing belt) that also drove the camshaft. In a conventional four-stroke diesel engine, it rotates at half crankshaft speed. It is timed to inject the fuel just before the top dead center of that cylinder's compression stroke. The pump belt is frequently driven directly from the camshaft on gasoline engines. In some systems, injection pressures can exceed 620 bar.

Fuel must be transferred to the fuel injection system from the fuel tank to function correctly. This is the function of the components of the low-pressure fuel system. The fuel tank, one or more fuel supply pumps, and one or more fuel filters are all part of the low-pressure side of the fuel system. Furthermore, many fuel systems include coolers and heaters to help control fuel temperature.
