Lower tube exhaust bellows are made to absorb displacements, vibrations, and thermal expansion to reduce the motion/kinetic energy within the engine or transfer from the engine to expensive emissions systems. Both on and off the water, bellows have a wide range of uses, from expanded buses to folding cameras. Their function is to provide flexibility while offering protection from moisture and debris. Bellows are used on boats to seal off the exhaust, the U-joints, and the shift cable. Every year, check the bellows and replace them for many years. Many people, including myself, believe that if the drive is taken out for maintenance, you might as well replace the bellows.
