One of the most common causes of engine leaks is debris caught in the fork seal, which keeps it open and allows oil to flow through. In situations when a metal-cased seal can fail, rubber-cased oil seals are utilized (for example, because of thermal expansion). These seals, unlike the metal-cased version, do not corrode. Furthermore, they can seal a moderately damaged housing better than metal-covered seals because rubber provides a more stable sealability at high temperatures.
Oil seals protect shafts and bearings from dirt and foreign matter entry, as well as oil or grease outflow.
