Both large and small ships use bilge pumps, those are nautical water pumps. Any water that builds up in bilge wells must be taken out and dumped by them. You cannot prevent water and oil from amassing in your bilge wells (the bottom-most part of a boat). These compounds frequently come from engine rooms or drainage systems of larger vessels. Large waves or rain can cause bilge well flooding in smaller crafts. Boat bilge pumps come in forms, dimensions, and capacities, but they all serve the same purpose.
