Oil Seal - Sierra Marine Engine Parts (18-0265) The shafts and bearings are sealed with oil to keep dirt and foreign particles out while allowing oil or grease to escape. An oil seal has two parts: The outer circular metal portion that seals the oil and an inside flexible member that seals the oil and is chemically attached to the metal part. All hydraulic systems, including pumps, pistons, and pipe connections, rely on oil seals and "O" rings. A rotary seal is an oil seal that seals a revolving element. Similarly, "O" rings are used for a similar purpose.
Oil Seal - Sierra Marine Engine Parts (18-0265) there are two options for rubber sealants: (1) synthetic and (2) natural rubber sealants. Cutting away the flash that forms at the sealing edge during molding is used to prepare the flexible member's sealing lip. A fine sealing edge applies enough pressure to the shaft to prevent leakage.
