Oil seals, as well known as shaft seals, are radial lip-type seals used primarily for lubricant retention in equipment with rotating, reciprocating, or oscillating shafts. The most common application is for a rotating shaft. It usually has three basic components: the sealing element, the metal case, and the spring. The sealing element's purpose is to prevent fluid from leaking between the shaft and housing. The garter spring keeps the sealing lip's radial force around the shaft surface in place. The performance of these seals is heavily reliant on maintaining a suitable unit load at the seal-shaft interface.
