Description

A piston is a moving disk encased in a cylinder and sealed by piston rings. The disk moves inside the cylinder as the liquid or gas inside the cylinder expands and compresses. Pistons work by transmitting the force output of expanding gas in the cylinder to a crankshaft, which delivers rotational momentum to a flywheel, making them a vital component of heat engines. A reciprocating engine is a type of system like this. A piston must follow a cyclical process to transfer heat energy to work continually, and there are numerous ways to accomplish this cycle.
