Description

The piston ring is critical to engine performance. The piston ring dampens vibration, absorbs heat energy, and effectively transmits it into the working fluid. When a cylinder liner fractures due to age or thermal strain, the piston's cooling is impaired, resulting in poor performance and a high wear rate. Key features:

The first is to operate as a seal between the piston and the cylinder head through a ring-to-ring seal (this is commonly referred to as "oil control"), and the second is to transport heat away from the hot piston and into the engine's cooled cylinder wall/block. Heat energy goes from the piston groove into the piston ring, then into the cylinder wall, and finally into the engine coolant.
