Injectors can directly dispense gasoline into the combustion chamber or onto the intake manifold (manifold injection) (petrol direct injection). The electric fuel pump moves the fuel from the tank to the injectors upon using manifold injection.

In engines with fuel injectors, electric fuel pumps move gasoline from the fuel tank to the injector.
