SPACER (FISH LINE PROTEC (18-4209) is just like the thrust washer, but it does differ from a thrust washer that is, in turn, depends on the final washer and on the nut to prevent it from moving on the shaft. It assists the alignment of the prop to the shaft when the inner hub is unable to hold its shape, but only this time at the aft end of the propeller.
SPACER (FISH LINE PROTEC (18-4209) also functionally bears reverse thrust loads and prevents the inner hub from moving aft, with its large surface area. Some of the spacers are splined. Numerous Mercury, Mariner, and Mercruiser applications are cogged or pinned to work in conjunction with an outer tab washer to prevent the nut from turning loose.
