This Starter Pawl is for Johnson/Evinrude OMC with 3 to 35 hp and model 1985-1999. It works as a connection between the flywheel and the recoil pulley. The pawls are pushed outwards by centrifugal force and locked onto the flywheel to start the engine when the starter turns. The starter pawl wears out or breaks over time, and the motor will not turn over because it disengages the flywheel. Your starter rope may pull too freely as a result of this.
