Volvo Penta Temperature Sensor (824552) measures the temperature of your coolant, which is a good way to figure out how hot your engine is. The sensor is essentially a thermistor, which changes resistance in response to temperature variations. The resistance is low when the ECT is high (hotter), and it is high when the ECT is low (cooler). This resistance reading is transmitted to the vehicle's internal computer, which uses it to control various ignition, fuel, and emission functions, as well as turn on and off the radiator cooling fan as needed.
