The purpose of thermostat gaskets is to create a seal between the thermostat housing and the engine of the vehicle. Most new thermostats, but not all, come with their rubber seals or gaskets. So be sure your new thermostat has one; if not, buy one. Keep in mind that you might need to seal the new gasket; consult your car's service manual for details. Thermostat Cover Gasket 18-2844-9 by Sierra is compatible with MCM/MIE GM V-8 engines. Mallory 9-60010, Barr MC472748818, GLM 31510, Mercruiser Stern Drive 27-48818, 27-488181, and 27-48818Q01 are all interchangeable with it. All Sierra products are equal to or better than the original equipment parts they are meant to replace.
