A thermostat controls the flow of the water used to cool the engine and maintains pressure in the cooling system, allowing heat to be transferred from the heads and cylinder walls.
As the temperature rises, the thermostat opens, allowing coolant to flow through the engine lowering the operating temperature.
By repeatedly opening and shutting, the thermostat maintains the motor's optimal working temperature.
