When the temperature rises, the thermostat opens, letting coolant flow through the outboard and lowering the operating temperature. A thermostat keeps the cooling water in the block from heating until the engine's temperature is reached. It then opens to allow the moisture to escape before it becomes too hot and overheats the outboard. In an outboard's cooling system, a thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve that opens or closes based on the temperature. When the thermostat is closed, the cooling water circulation through the outboard is disrupted, raising the motor's working temperature. The engine will run at the proper temperature if the thermostat is working properly.
