A thermostat is a device that senses temperature changes to maintain a relatively constant temperature in an enclosed area. When the temperature exceeds the required value, the thermostat creates signals, generally electrical, in a system that includes relays, valves, switches, and many others.
A thermostat serves two vital tasks in keeping an engine at its proper temperature; it closes when the vessel engine is cold. As the engine heats up, the door gradually opens. A thermostat remains the cooling water in the block at the temperature specified by the engine manufacturer. It is usually between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius. It opens to allow the liquid to escape before it becomes too hot and overheats the outboard.
