A Timing Gear Cover - Volvo Penta (3859023) is a component found in internal combustion engines that protects timing gears, chains, and belts. The timing cover protects the front end of the block when using the timing chain. Upon using the timing belt, the timing cover is less important. Timing chain engines typically have a metal cover. A timing cover gasket will normally seal these covers to the block, and if it fails, it could cause engine oil leaks. Furthermore, the crankshaft will usually pass through a seal built into the timing cover, which may leak. A timing cover gasket replacement is often a time-consuming task, although a crankshaft oil seal can sometimes be replaced without removing the cover.
