The engine's lifeblood is oil. It circulates through numerous internal pathways within the machine, similar to how blood does in the human body, and externally through components like hoses. Oil serves various purposes in our engines, including lubricating opposing surfaces, preventing corrosion, and helping absorb and radiate some of the heat produced by combustion. Most likely, you are already familiar with how the vernatherm operates. Similarly, the thermostat in your car's cooling system serves as a temperature-activated spring-loaded valve in the coolant flow. As the coolant/antifreeze heats up, a spring extends to open the valve, enabling a graduated flow of fluid to the radiator and allowing the coolant to reject the heat it has absorbed before reentering the engine to restart the process. To a maximum that corresponds to when the thermostat is at its maximum opening or flow, the valve's opening size is proportional to the temperature of the coolant leaving the engine water jackets.
