At near-maximum speed and lightly loaded, planing boats acquire their greatest possible running attitude. The boat will begin to settle towards the stern, or "squat," as it slows from top speed. By adding people, fuel, and gear, weight can be varied to extremes. Uneven weight distribution makes the boat more difficult to control, making it harder to come upon a plane, and almost always causes some listing to port or starboard.
