The steering system on boats is typically not given much thought by boaters as long as it does the job without excessive play or friction, but as our boats get older, the steering system may need to be changed. It's best practice to install new steering in the same way your boat's old steering was done: rotary steering with rotary, rack steering with a rack, hydraulic steering with hydraulic. It facilitates installation and guarantees that your boat will continue to handle as it was intended (a very doable DIY project for many boat owners). Examine the markings on the cable's jacket to determine and the inscriptions on the helm's cast or molded body to know its type.
