A basic understanding of how your ignition system works is essential additionally to having the correct instruments to aid in diagnostics. The trigger (or timer base) is tucked between the stator and the flywheel. The trigger delivers a signal to the CDI unit (power pack or switch box) telling it when to release voltage to the coil. It is probably the most ignored aspect of the ignition system. A defective trigger causes no or sporadic spark and is commonly misunderstood as a power pack problem. A malfunctioning trigger shorting to the ground can also damage a power pack, so be cautious when installing a new power pack.
