The cotter or split pin, also known as the 5/32 X 2 1/2 Stainless Steel (12-2882), is a simple fastener that secures a bolt or other rod-shaped fastener in place. The spherical top is held in place by a bolt and is formed of a narrow U-shaped metal plate with a flared pattern. The pin has a split end that separates after insertion, which helps to secure the component. Cotter pins are simple to install because they don't require special tools.
