An engine's vacuum is used to draw gasoline through the carburetor's metering jets, and it is then introduced at the highest point of vacuum and airflow to mix it with the air in a precise amount. The most critical area for the vacuum signal is where a failing carburetor gasket will allow air to sneak in rather than fuel to escape.
