A carburetor Volvo Penta mixes the air and fuel in a suitable air-fuel ratio for combustion in internal combustion engines. In the automobile it is the fuel injection technology has effectively replaced carburetors. The butterfly valve reduces air intake. It allows a fuel-rich charge to flow into the cylinders. The choke opens gradually while the engine warms up, either by hand or automatically via heat- and engine-speed-responsive controllers. Fuel flows out of the idle jet into the intake air at the reduced pressure at the partially closed throttle valve. The throttle valve opens further while the main fuel jet is activated. The venturi-shaped airflow restriction provides a lower pressure. It allows fuel to flow from the main jet into the airstream airflow, resulting in a practically constant fuel-to-air ratio. The accelerator pump injects fuel into the incoming air when the throttle opens suddenly.
