An ignition system's primary job is to generate an electric spark in the engine combustion chamber at the appropriate moment so that the fuel and air combination may ignite. The distributor shaft cam spins as the engine revolves until the high point on the cam forces the breaker points to separate abruptly. When a point opens, the current flow through the ignition coil's primary windings stops instantly thus, causes the magnetic field around the vessel coil to collapse.
