The flexible vanes are rotated on an eccentric within a stainless-steel liner in the pump housing by the hub. While the boat's engine is operating, an impeller pumps cold water into it to keep it cool. The water pump in marine engines has an impeller. Because there is no wall between the vanes, outboard impellers are slightly weaker than closed or semi-closed impellers. The blade stresses are substantially lower. The fluid enters the impeller's eye, where vanes contribute energy and direct it to the nozzle discharge. The most liquid does not flow back due to a small space between the vanes and the pump volute or backplate.
