It's a small filtering device that removes water from diesel fuel before it gets to the engine's sensitive sections.
FUEL/WATER SEPARATOR - 18-7983-2 first stage uses a pleated paper element to convert water particles into large enough droplets to fall to a water sump at the bottom of the filter by gravity. The second stage is comprised of silicone-treated nylon and serves as a safety mechanism to keep small particles of water from entering the engine after passing through the first stage.
