When operating small boats with open helm stations, the lanyard-style kill switch is the most popular tool. The lanyard is typically a coiled bungee cord lanyard with one end tied to the boat's engine cut-off switch and the other clipped to the operator's person, such as clothing or a life jacket. The lanyard pulls away if the operator is knocked from the helm, turning off the boat's engine switch. This crucial safety feature stops the vessel from moving through the water without a driver, reducing the possibility of colliding with other crafts or running over passengers. Without an operator, boats under power frequently begin to circle, endangering not just other vessels but also the Coast Guard personnel who must retrieve them.
