A raw water pump with a flexible impeller is a common feature of marine engines. Raw water from the boat's outside is pumped via the engine's raw water cooling pipes. Although these impellers are dependable, some caution is needed. It is better that you have a spare impeller in your boat and changes your impeller every year or every 100 hours, whichever comes first. Your impeller finally becomes so worn out from lake water's natural abrasion and debris that the raw water pump can no longer keep up with the engine's heat output. This causes the engine to overheat, which might cause the engine to fail.
