An inboard/outboard boatsometimes referred to as a "stern drive" boathas a short "drive shaft" that may not seem like a drive shaft. It has an engine coupler responsible for the coupling shaft. Mercruiser Engine Coupler - Sierra Marine Engine Parts - 18-2172 (118-2172) connects the engine to the stern drive. It takes the form of a steel plate or perhaps a short shaft with holes bored through one end for bolting to the boat's engine flywheel. Even if it looks like a round, square, or even triangular plate, it's still a drive shaft that connects the boat's power source to the propulsion system in the same way that a car's engine connects to the drive wheels.
