The trigger is tucked underneath the flywheel next to the stator (or timer base). The ignition system's trigger, which informs the CDI unit (power pack or switch box) when to release voltage to the coil, is likely its most underappreciated component. The lack of spark or intermittent ignition caused by a defective trigger is sometimes misunderstood as a power pack issue. Additionally, a power pack will be harmed by a defective trigger shorting to the ground, therefore use caution while installing a replacement power pack. The following six-cylinder engines, with 90 to 225 HP, fit the CDI Electronics 134-6456 Mercury/Mariner Trigger from 1976 to 1999. 68162A 1, 68162A 5, 68162A 8, 96455A 6, 96455A 9, 96455A10, and 96455A11 are the part numbers that they replace.
