The pieces of metal encircle the bore and chamber, augmenting the head gasket sealing capabilities. An O-ring is a gasket with a circular-looped design to seal two working surfaces. Without this small and otherwise simple component, the oil may leak into the valve guides where its burned inside the combustion chamber.
