The SAE from SAE 10W30 ENGINE OIL is short term for the Society of Automotive Engineers that developed a scale for both engine like motor oil grades and transmission oils. The 10W-30 oil will thin out at higher temperatures faster than 10W-40 will. The number 10W-30 represents the oil's resistance to thinning at high temperatures and it means that the viscosity of the oil is rated at 10W when an engine is cold and 30 when the engine is hot.
