The shift shaft comes into contact with the transmission to shift the outboard into or out of gear. To move the boat forward or backward, it also communicates with the gearbox to decide which way the propeller shaft should rotate. If the bottom unit is in good condition, the shift shaft should require little to no maintenance and should last the whole life of the outboard. Mercruiser I and Alpha I stern drives can employ the Sierra 18-2322 Shift Shaft. Per package, one shift shaft is included. It is interchangeable with Mercruiser Stern Drive 62104, 621041, and GLM 21421. All Sierra products are equal to the original equipment parts they replace.
