Everytime the vehicle is turned on, the ignition switch connects the starter to the battery, allowing the battery to transmit a tremendous rush of electricity to the starting. The ignition switch typically has four positions: off, accessories, on, and start in most situations. The two-off settings on some automobiles are off and lock; the former turns the vehicle off, while the latter allows the key to be removed from the ignition. The starter engages when the key is inserted and turned to the start position in the ignition switch lock cylinder; when the key is withdrawn, it returns to the on position, disconnecting power to the starter.
